Spline Cutting & Custom Gear Fabrication

Although splines can be cold-formed by several different processes, it is generally recognized that the “Grob” process produces the most accurate form with greater depth and less weight than any of the other processes.

In using the “Grob” cold forming process to produce a clutch housing, there is no metal removal in the spline area instead a high number of small rapid impacts or hammer blows form the metal. This gives an additional benefit of increasing surface hardness.

Styberg deep draws a shell from coil or strip steel. Then, the shell is formed and compressed into the spline shape, using a “Grob” forming machine. Finally, the housings are trimmed to length and completed with oil slots, snap ring grooves, etc.
