Styberg’s core strength is manufacturing parts that require heavy-gauge stamping and forming, complex weldments, precision machining, grinding, heat treating, welding and assembly. Because nearly every manufacturing operation is performed in-house, Styberg maintains greater control over quality, production schedules and lead times while minimizing reliance on outside suppliers.

Expansive and Scalable Production Capabilities

Styberg routinely stamps and forms materials up to 5/8” thick for applications where strength and durability are critical. Its components are used in heavy-duty truck transmissions, off-highway equipment, fire apparatus, buses, high-performance vehicles and aerospace systems. Many of these industries depend on products with long life cycles, and Styberg continues to manufacture components that have remained in service for decades because they consistently deliver the performance customers expect.

More than 150 employees help operate the 175,000-square-foot facility in Racine, Wisconsin, where precision metal stamping equipment and production controls include:

  • 15 presses from 5-ton to 1,000-ton running coil or flat sheet

  • Multiple machining centers including mills, lathes, VTLs, pot and pull broaches, shapers and hobbs, and cold forming of splines and Wire EDM

The evolution of drivetrain component manufacturing at Styberg Engineering Company is closely tied to its longstanding investment in Ernst Grob AG technology. What began in the late 1980s with a single Grob machine has grown into a core capability that defines Styberg’s position as a leader in large-diameter cold-formed transmission components.

Styberg recently made its fourth Grob purchase, a new four-roller, CNC-controlled machine set to further advance production when it is installed this summer. Earlier Grob models relied on gear-driven systems and two-roller configurations. The capital investment will position Styberg customers for greater precision, faster cycle times, and the flexibility to produce a wider range of spline configurations. In fact, the newest system can produce parts approximately 2.5 times faster than Styberg’s existing machines, significantly increasing throughput while maintaining tight tolerances.

Beyond manufacturing parts, Styberg believes the best results come from working alongside customers’ engineering teams early in the design process. By participating in prototype development, the company’s engineers recommend improvements that enhance manufacturability while maintaining the functionality and performance requirements of the finished component. Early collaboration also allows Styberg to identify opportunities to reduce production costs before a project moves into full-scale manufacturing.

As production volumes grow, manufacturing methods often need to evolve.
